Welcome to our website. We hope you will find it informative and that it may inspire you to take up bee keeping

The Devon Beekeepers Association is a registered charity whose objective is to further the craft of beekeeping.

bee hoveringBeekeeping has been recorded in Devon for over 1000 years. The Western Apiarian Society was the first beekeeping association in the English speaking world and was the forerunner of the Devon Beekeepers Association which was founded, more or less in its present form, in 1875.

Beekeeping has been published by Devon Beekeepers Association since 1935. It is the modern inheritor of a tradition that began in 1797 with the Transactions of the Western Apairian Society, a magazine many consider to be the first beekeeping journal in the world. This continued to be published until 1809. Between 1898 and 1935 the Association journal was known as The Devon Beekeepers Association Monthly Journal.

The Devon Beekeepers Association is an active member of the British Beekeepers Association and Bee Disease Insurance and is represented on the Devon Conservation Forum and the English Nature Hedge Group.

The Devon Beekeepers Association is organised into eleven branches which cover the whole of Devon and its 600 members. These are detailed on  the contacts page.

The branches organise local events including honey shows, lectures, apiary meetings and classes for novices. Many branches run bulk purchase schemes and apiaries from which nucleus' and queens can be purchased. Being a member of the Devon Beekeepers Association entitles the member to attend any branch meeting in the county giving the member a very wide range of activities in which to participate.

Still Interested? - Why not contact the Branch Secretary nearest to you and get even more information.  You could also arrange to go to an Apiary meeting and see for yourself what beekeeping entails.
